Prime Minister’s Science Prizes

Royal Society Te Apārangi

The Prime Minister’s Science Prizes are New Zealand’s most prestigious science awards, recognising excellence in innovation, research, communication, and education. Administered by Royal Society Te Apārangi, these awards celebrate the country’s top scientific minds and their contributions to society.

Since 2020, Quite Nice Films has produced five documentary-style videos each year, bringing the stories of the prize winners and their incredible research to life.

What we did:

  • On-location filming – Traveling across Aotearoa New Zealand to interview prize-winning scientists in their natural research environments—whether in classrooms, cutting-edge labs, or remote field sites.

  • Cinematic interview setups – Designing multi-camera interview setups with professional lighting and audio to ensure visually compelling, high-quality storytelling.

  • B-roll ideation & capture – Filming additional footage that visually enhances each winner’s story, showcasing their research, relationships, and future impact.

  • Post-production & animation – Transforming complex scientific topics into engaging, easily digestible videos. Using custom motion graphics, data visualisations, and 3D animations, bringing research to life and making it accessible to a wider audience.
